Gambella region’s President Gatluak Tut and his deputy Seany Akwor, has announced resignation from their party positions.
Fana broadcasting disclosed in a report made available on its Facebook page on Thursday.
The resignation comes after a five-day evaluative meeting of Gambella People’s Democratic Movement (GPDM), held in Gambella, the region’s capital.
According to the report following their resignation Gambella People’s Democratic Movement elected Omud Ujulu and Anguaya Jackenis as the new chairman and vice-chairman respectively.
The two leaders have resigned from the party’s executive committee but remain in the central committee, according to the report from Fana.
The newly elected chairperson of the party promised to accomplish huge developments by maintaining peace and security.
He also urged the public to stand by the regional government and the party.
EPRDF, the ruling coalition has approved the resignation of GPDM leaders and said that the problems in the region need to be addressed in order to ensure peace and stability in the region.
Gambela Peoples’ Democratic Movement (GPDM, is a political party in the Gambela Region of Ethiopia. It is the regional ally of the ruling EPRDF coalition.
Following its predecessor Gambella People’s Liberation Movement (GPLM), GPDM was founded as the new regional EPRDF ally in 2003.
Last month,at least six people were killed and several others injured in Gambella following the protest in the town demanding for a change in local government.
